“The North Winds of Chisholm” comes in part from a Will James book I recently read. The story is about a young cowboy preparing to set out on his own for the first time heading to the Chisholm Trail. Vic’s latest sculpture captures a moment in time as this young cowboy leaves the security of his family homestead, leaving behind his ma, pa, sisters and brothers as “The North Winds of Chisholm” beckon him onward.
As his son changes range heading up the Chisholm Trail on his first cattle drive and having heard the stories of the wild Kansas cattle towns with Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday – the West at its wildest, his pa talks to him one last time imparting final words of wisdom. He will no doubt spend a great deal of time watching the horizon, hoping for his sons safe return to the home range.
