My kids and I spent a wonderful weekend with Vic and Angie Payne and their family. Vic is a 2nd generation sculptor and world renowned artist. We are so honored to have his extraordinary talent on the sculpture of Chris planned for a beautiful setting in Odessa, Texas outside of a veteran’s hospital. The goal is for the setting to be a healing peaceful place for veterans and their families receiving care at the medical center and for those citizens who want to stop by and take a moment thinking of Chris and all those who serve.

Being in Vic’s studio was emotional and moving. The peace in his studio was palpable. Spiritual instrumental music mixed in with old western songs Chris loved, being at Vic and Angie’s home with horses and mountains, snow and open plains … It just felt so perfect. Vic still rides his horses into the mountains to camp and sit around the bonfire. Angie volunteers for the Buffalo Bill Art Show in Cody, Wyoming each year.

This picture was a welcome moment of laughing after many of heartfelt teary moments with the kids and me looking at how he is bringing Chris to life. He is a man who cares so deeply about getting every detail and nuance right and it shows. This picture shows where he is in the process of the sculpture, but Vic will still do a lot of fine tuning and working on it before it is bronzed.
