KEEPER OF THE HOMELAND

In his ongoing exploration of the American West, Vic Payne was inspired to create the bronze sculpture ‘Keeper of the Homeland’ as a sequel to his earlier work, ‘The Charge.’ In this evocative piece, Vic skillfully captures the Native American Indian’s perspective on our nation’s history during the tumultuous Indian Wars.

The sculpture transports us back to 1829, a pivotal time when President Andrew Jackson encouraged Native Americans to relocate west of the Mississippi. By 1875, the very notion of the “West” had undergone profound changes, signifying the end of the Native American horse era. In ‘Keeper of the Homeland,’ an Indian war hero charges forward with unwavering determination, fiercely protecting his ancestral homeland.

Vic pays meticulous attention to detail, capturing the essence of the brave warrior. From the flowing buffalo skull and eagle feather headdress to the intricate beadwork adorning his clothes and the the brass nails on the stock of the 62 Caliber single-action black powder musket, each element reflects the indomitable pride and unwavering commitment of the American Indian. This sculpture stands as a powerful testament to their resilience and courage.
